Understand each processing path
Speech and rewrite use separate active backends. Eligible cloud paths, including allowed temporary speech fallback, transmit the content needed for that operation.
Active local speech backend
When active, speech audio is transcribed on your Mac.
Separate rewrite backend
On-device rewrite is separate and available only where the direct Mac distribution and current product access permit it.
Offline after setup
Verify the active local backend and model readiness for the exact run.
From thought to text in one shortcut
Hold, speak, and release. Verify the active processing path when locality matters.
Hold the shortcut
Press and hold your hotkey in the Mac app where you want to write.
Speak naturally
Say what you mean. Paraspeech processes the recording using the resolved active speech backend.
Release
Paraspeech attempts to insert the result into the active editable field; unsupported fields may require clipboard fallback.
Voice input across your Mac
Paraspeech supports local and eligible cloud-backed speech paths, meeting transcription, and Accessibility-enabled insertion into many editable fields.
Across your Mac
With Accessibility permission, Paraspeech can insert text into many editable Mac text fields; unsupported fields may require a clipboard fallback.
Broad language coverage
Fast local models cover English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and 25-language dictation. Multilingual Large provides broader 100+ language coverage where that model is available.
AI rewriting
Turn rambling speech into clean, formatted text with Cloud Cleanup or, where the direct Mac distribution and current product access permit it, an on-device rewrite model.

Speech-to-Text FAQ
Have a different question and can’t find the answer you’re looking for? Reach out and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
- Does Paraspeech require an internet connection?
- Supported local modes can run offline after setup; initial model downloads and cloud-backed features require internet.
- Will Paraspeech slow down my Mac?
- Resource use varies by the selected model, hardware, and workflow. When the direct Mac distribution and current product access make on-device rewriting available, its optional model can briefly use more CPU, GPU, and memory while it runs.
- Which apps does Paraspeech work with?
- With Accessibility permission, Paraspeech can insert text into many editable Mac text fields; unsupported fields may require a clipboard fallback.
- Is my voice data private?
- Privacy depends on the active speech backend, the separate rewrite backend, temporary speech-fallback state, and operational feature. When the active speech-recognition backend is local, speech audio is transcribed on your Mac. When the direct Mac distribution and current product access make an on-device rewrite backend available, and that backend is active, rewrite text is processed on your Mac. Eligible cloud speech or rewrite paths, including allowed temporary speech fallback, transmit the content needed for that operation to the applicable cloud provider; operational flows such as account access, purchases, analytics, diagnostics, downloads, support, and updates may also use the network.
- What hardware do I need?
- Requires macOS 14.0 or later. Apple Silicon Macs can use local modes; eligible Intel Macs use cloud-backed subscription models. Paraspeech for iPhone and iPad is available on the App Store and requires iOS or iPadOS 17.0 or later.
- How does the trial work?
- You get a number of free transcriptions to try it out. The app shows how many you have left. After that, you can choose a monthly or yearly plan, or grab a lifetime license.
- What languages does Paraspeech support?
- Fast local models cover English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and 25-language dictation. Multilingual Large provides broader 100+ language coverage where that model is available.
- Can I use Paraspeech on multiple devices?
- Yes. Monthly and yearly subscriptions cover your Macs, iPhones, and iPads. Paraspeech for iPhone and iPad is available on the App Store and requires iOS or iPadOS 17.0 or later. Lifetime covers your personal devices for local/on-device features.
- How do I use Paraspeech?
- Hold your shortcut key (Control by default), speak, and release. When processing completes, Paraspeech attempts to insert the text into the active editable field.
- What is AI Rewriting?
- AI Rewriting polishes transcripts with Cloud Cleanup or, when the direct Mac distribution and current product access make them available, optional on-device templates. Cloud Cleanup requires internet access and permission to use cloud processing. The on-device model can use more resources while active.
