Reasons to try Paraspeech
You want hold-to-talk writing in Mac apps and a choice of supported local or cloud-backed modes. Speech and rewriting have separate settings. If eligible local features are your priority, compare Lifetime's update terms with a subscription and test your usual text.
Reasons to try Monologue
You want Apple Watch capture, synced voice Notes or bot-free meeting notes alongside dictation. Its stored Notes can be accessed through MCP, API and CLI tools. Monologue may also fit if you already use Every's software and newsletter bundle.
Dictation and saved Notes differ
Monologue says it does not save Dictation audio or transcripts on its servers, and its AI providers process Dictation with zero retention. A saved Note is different: its audio, transcript and summary are stored in your account for syncing and later access. Zero retention does not mean every operation runs locally.
Paraspeech requires macOS 14.0 or later. Supported local models need Apple Silicon and an initial download; cloud features and allowed cloud fallback need internet. Check speech and rewrite settings separately. The app receiving your dictated text has its own processing and storage practices, whichever dictation tool you choose.
