The best dictation software for writers is the tool that gets a usable draft into the document you already work in. Start with Apple Dictation as the built-in Mac baseline. If your drafts stay in Google Docs, try its voice typing. Compare dedicated apps when you need different transcription models, rewriting controls or a shortcut you can use across writing surfaces.
This guide compares six options for Mac prose drafting: Apple Dictation, Google Docs Voice Typing, Paraspeech, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and VoiceInk. Choose by the task, then test your own names, punctuation and editing effort.
About this comparison: Prepared by Alex Burlis, founder of Paraspeech. We sell one of the products compared. Paraspeech is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper or VoiceInk.

Choose the first tool to test
| Your writing requirement | First option to test | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Speak into your Mac editor without adding a dedicated app | Apple Dictation | Your language, punctuation and the processing information in Keyboard settings. |
| Keep drafting and voice editing inside Google Docs | Google Docs Voice Typing | Browser support and the English-language requirement for editing commands. |
| Use a Mac shortcut with word replacements and supported local or cloud modes | Paraspeech | Insertion in your actual fields, Accessibility permission, hardware and plan scope. |
| Have dictation cleaned up before it reaches the selected field | Wispr Flow | How its cleanup treats your wording; internet access is required for transcription. |
| Choose voice models and optional AI processing separately | Superwhisper | Both processing stages and the instructions in each mode. |
| Configure Mac transcription, enhancement and output modes | VoiceInk | Local-model requirements, output behavior and any separate hosted-provider costs. |
These are starting points, not an overall ranking. If the built-in or editor option handles the complete task, keep using it. A dedicated app should solve a problem you can identify in your own draft.
Free and paid plans: what changes the writing decision
These are the vendors' direct website prices in US dollars, checked 23 October 2026. Annual prices are annual commitments; store offers, taxes and regional checkout prices can differ.
| Option | Starting point | When paying changes the workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Dictation | Included with macOS | No separate dictation purchase. Try your language and writing app first. |
| Google Docs Voice Typing | Included in Google Docs | A dedicated app matters if you need dictation beyond Docs or different processing controls. |
| Paraspeech | Direct subscription trial: 7 days, unlimited transcriptions | $14.99/month or $99/year for supported local and cloud features. $199 Lifetime covers eligible local features and 12 months of updates; you keep the last covered version. |
| Wispr Flow | Free tier: 2,000 words/week on desktop | Pro removes the dictation limit: $15/user/month, or $12/user/month billed annually. Its transcription remains cloud-based. |
| Superwhisper | Unlimited local Whisper dictation; up to two modes without AI processing | Pro adds cloud models, AI processing and file transcription: $8.49/month, $84.99/year or $249.99 once. |
| VoiceInk | One-time Mac license | Solo is $25 for one Mac; $39 covers two and $49 covers three, with lifetime updates. Optional hosted-provider usage is billed separately. |
If you want to preserve a character's rough phrasing, start with plain transcription rather than paying for automatic rewriting. If repetitive cleanup is the problem, compare the paid processing controls using a passage that includes dialogue and a self-correction. If the free option already gives you a usable manuscript, there is no writing benefit in upgrading just for a longer feature list.
Check hardware and model support before comparing one-time prices. Paraspeech's app minimum is macOS 14, with supported local models on Apple Silicon and cloud-backed subscription models on Intel. VoiceInk's official pages disagree on its minimum requirements; the VoiceInk section below explains the conflict for readers on macOS 14 or Intel.
Which text dictation software fits your writing app?
Choose text dictation software by where you will finish the draft. A tool that works in one editor can be enough; a Mac shortcut matters when your writing moves between documents, email and other editable fields.
- Microsoft Word: If you already subscribe to Microsoft 365, test Word's Home → Dictate before paying for another app. Microsoft requires a microphone, a reliable internet connection and a signed-in subscription. Its dictation commands include punctuation and paragraph breaks. Microsoft's Word instructions, checked 23 October 2026.
- Google Docs: Use Tools → Voice typing in a supported browser. Keep the account and document language in English if you need Google's voice editing commands. Google's instructions, checked 23 October 2026.
- A Mac editor such as Scrivener or Ulysses: Start with Apple Dictation in the actual document. Compare a dedicated app if you need different models, replacement rules or cleanup controls. Test comments and notes separately; insertion support in one field does not establish support in every field.
For long-form writing, dictate one scene or section at a time and save the raw draft before optional rewriting. Check character names, negation and quotations before continuing. The repeatable writing test below helps you compare the corrections each app needs without relying on a vendor accuracy claim.
Built-in and editor options
Apple Dictation
Apple Dictation deserves a full drafting test. Apple's guide allows text of any length, with spoken punctuation and formatting such as paragraph breaks. It is not restricted to short notes. Features vary by language and region; Keyboard settings show whether general text dictation is processed on your device for your configuration. Apple's Mac instructions
Try it in your writing application's document body, then in any comments or summary fields you use. Judge the resulting draft and corrections before adding another tool.
Google Docs Voice Typing
Google Docs supports voice typing and voice editing in the latest Chrome, Edge and Safari browsers. Editing commands require both the account and document language to be English. Google says the browser controls the speech-to-text service and sends the resulting text to Docs. Check that processing arrangement if your work has specific data requirements. Google's voice-typing instructions
Start here when Docs is your whole drafting environment. If your work moves into other editors, compare the complete transfer and correction process rather than just the words produced inside Docs.
Dedicated Mac dictation apps
Paraspeech
Paraspeech uses a hold-to-record shortcut: speak, release, then review the text. With Accessibility permission, it can insert into many editable Mac text fields; unsupported fields may require clipboard fallback. Its manual Dictionary supports Original and Replacement rules with optional case-sensitive matching. A narrow rule for a recurring name can be useful; a broad replacement can change wording you meant to keep. Paraspeech documentation
Test Paraspeech if you want that shortcut workflow across your writing surfaces and its supported local or cloud processing choices fit your Mac. The hardware, processing and plan boundaries are explained below.
Wispr Flow
Wispr Flow documents dictation into the selected field, with cleanup of filler words, punctuation and self-corrections, plus a dictionary for recurring terms. Its transcription requires internet. Flow overview
Test whether that cleanup helps your writing or changes phrasing you want to preserve, especially dialogue and informal voice. Wispr's model-improvement, cloud-storage and local-history controls are separate choices; review each rather than treating a training opt-out as a storage guarantee. Wispr Data Controls
Superwhisper
Superwhisper's modes pair a voice model with optional AI text processing. You can choose local or cloud voice models and configure the later language-model stage separately. Superwhisper modes
It is an option to test when you want different instructions for a scene draft, an email or plain transcription. For a local workflow, check both stages: a local voice model followed by cloud text processing still sends text off your Mac. You can also use voice-to-text without the AI stage. Superwhisper processing configuration
VoiceInk
VoiceInk's modes control transcription, optional enhancement and output, including pasting text or showing it in the recorder. VoiceInk modes
VoiceInk's official requirements conflict as of 23 October 2026: its purchase page specifies Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, while its installation guide specifies macOS 15 or later and recommends cloud transcription on Intel. Its local-model documentation warns about unreliable Intel operation. If you use macOS 14 or an Intel Mac, verify the current installer's requirements and your intended model before buying.
Hosted transcription or enhancement can be connected with your own provider keys. Those provider charges are separate from the VoiceInk license; transcription sends audio, while enhancement sends text and any enabled context. Test the configuration you intend to use rather than assuming every mode stays local. VoiceInk cloud providers
For a closer choice, compare Paraspeech with Wispr Flow or VoiceInk. The comparison directory also covers other alternatives and their different workflows.
Try a passage from the writing you actually do
Choose a scene, article section or client email you already understand. Include one recurring name and a detail that must survive unchanged. Speak it into the app where you will revise it, then finish the edit.
For fiction, notice whether cleanup preserves dialogue, deliberate repetition and character voice. For an article, notice whether you can develop the argument without repeatedly stopping to fix the input. For source-based work, add exact quotations, citations and links from the original material afterward.
For example, dictate a scene in which a character refuses an offer until Friday. If cleanup removes “until” or changes Friday, the sentence may read smoothly while changing the story. Correct the meaning before polishing the style.
Compare these four things:
- Drafting: Can you speak a useful section without repeatedly restarting?
- Corrections: Which names, facts or phrases need repair?
- Cleanup: Does optional rewriting save editing work or alter wording you meant to keep?
- Destination: Does the text reach the document or summary field you use, or require manual paste?
Use the same kind of passage when comparing two apps. Keep the option that helps you finish the draft. You do not need a detailed scorecard to decide that a built-in tool is sufficient or that a particular cleanup mode changes too much.
Paraspeech hardware, processing and plans
Paraspeech requires macOS 14 or later. Supported local speech models run on Apple Silicon Macs after the model download. Intel Macs use cloud-backed models with a subscription, so Paraspeech is not an offline Intel recommendation. Initial downloads and cloud processing require internet. Mac and offline requirements
Speech recognition and rewriting are separate processing steps. On-device rewriting is available in the direct-download Mac app for eligible accounts. Check the selected speech and rewrite models and any allowed temporary cloud speech fallback before using a draft that must stay local. Your destination editor may also sync the text independently. Processing details
Subscriptions include supported local and cloud models. Lifetime is a one-time purchase for eligible local features, with twelve months of updates; afterward you can keep using the last covered version, and further updates may require another purchase. Direct Monthly and Yearly subscriptions include a seven-day trial with unlimited transcriptions, followed by paid billing at the displayed terms. Plan scope and terms, current pricing
Choose the workflow first, then the plan. If you need help setting up permissions or models, use the Mac speech-to-text setup guide and Paraspeech documentation.
Try one real section
Start with the option that fits where you write and how your draft may be processed. If Paraspeech fits those requirements, compare plans and download for Mac. After onboarding, use an eligible plan or trial to dictate a real section and review the corrections.
For a wider set of Mac use cases, read the Mac dictation buyer guide. If your starting point is an existing recording, use the audio-file transcription guide for that different task.
